Principal's Letter

Dear Concordia Families and Staff,

It is my humble honor that I write this letter to introduce myself as the newly appointed Principal of Concordia Elementary. I look forward to working with all members of the school’s community and continue the legacy of offering a high-quality experience for all students. I am eager to join the Concordia team and begin building strong relationships with students, families, staff, and our community partners.  As an educator and mother of an elementary and a middle school student, I understand the challenges families and schools face in raising children in a rapidly changing digital world. Through strong home-school connections, I know we will be able to ensure that every student is engaged, feels safe, happy, and is achieving high levels of academic success. I have already heard of the great work being done within the school and I look forward to being a part of this school’s next chapter.

Joining Concordia Elementary is very exciting for our family, as San Clemente was our home for many years before moving to the Pacific Northwest and we are very happy to again be members of this community. Over the past 13 years, I have served in a variety of teaching and educational roles in both California and Washington State. Some of the roles I have held include elementary classroom teacher, teacher on special assignment (TOSA) supporting English learners, middle school instructional coach, Director of the English learning program and most recently Elementary Assistant Principal at Marian Bergeson Elementary. My academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from Cal Poly Pomona, Master of Arts in Teaching from Chapman University and a Certificate of Administration from Western Washington University.

I am passionate about partnering with the Concordia staff to provide students with a rigorous, engaging, and innovative learning experience to support the independent thinking necessary for future achievement. My goal is to ensure that all children are supported with high-quality instruction that supports risk-taking, curiosity and wonder. I am eager to undertake this work and look forward to getting to know the students, staff, and families that form our community. We cannot do this work in isolation, and I am truly committed to creating and maintaining authentic opportunities to engage all stakeholders in this learning.

I recognize this transition comes at a challenging time for our community and nation, please know that I will be working closely with Assistant Superintendent Brad Shearer and Principal McKane to ensure a smooth transition. It is a privilege to be able to serve alongside an amazing community of staff, families, and students in the coming year. As principal, my door is always open to answer questions and gather ideas as to how best to honor the traditions and goals of Concordia Elementary.

Warm Regards,

Gretchen Fleming
